Creativity Calling - Waking Up with a Song Idea

I woke up this morning with my mind spinning. It’s strange how quickly the energy returns when the workweek ends, the tension from a long week melting away while the quiet of the weekend mornings bringing a welcome sense of peace.

I had a good night's sleep after a few restless nights. Instead of getting up at 4am like I have been lately, I managed to fall back asleep and drift in and out of a dream. My mind was spinning when I woke up because I kept hearing an interesting melody playing in the background of my dream, and I continued to hear it loud and clear after I finally woke up.

As the melody from my dream played over and over in my head, I knew I needed to get it down before it slipped away. I grabbed my laptop and started writing, simple at first with just a few lines:

Why don’t you sit close to me,
Just take my hand,
Won’t you sit close to me,
And help me understand...

As I whispered the words and melody under my breath and the rest of the song began to take shape, I knew in the back of my mind that when I finally brought the idea to life it wouldn’t sound exactly like what I heard in my head when I first woke up. The curse of the creative process!

I gave myself a little reminder to embrace the struggle, knowing I need to enjoy the process even when I may not capture the exact ideas as they first come to me, doing my best to write down the thought however I can whether it’s poems, lyrics, or broken song ideas.

And what do I have to show for the hours spent this morning trying to get the idea down? Lyrics to a song. A simple starting point. And gratitude for the quiet morning where I got to sit with an idea and hear a this song over and over again in my head.

Sit Close to Me

(Verse 1)
Why don’t you sit close to me
Will you take my hand
Tell me how it’s supposed to be
And help me understand

(Chorus)
Cause you can always sit close to me
Just sit close to me
It doesn’t matter where you are
I hope you can see
That good things may come and go
But something you should know
Is you can always sit close to me

(Verse 2)
Today you say you’re feeling low
And that you’re all alone
Spinning on the thoughts inside
You always try to hide

(Chorus)
So why don’t you sit close to me
Just sit close to me
It doesn’t matter where you are
I hope that you can see
That good things may come and go
But something you should know
Is you can always sit close to me

(Bridge)
And if there is one thing that you should understand
Is all the pieces are broken up in strands
You gave it all away, far too easy
But in the end, all you really needed, was to take my hand

(Closing Chorus/ Outro)
Come on and sit close to me
Just sit close to me
It doesn’t matter where you are
I hope you can see
That good things may come and go
But I hope you know
You can always sit close to me
